Duke Women’s Basketball Stings Georgia Tech

DURHAM, N.C. – After being on the road for the last two games, the Duke Blue Devils women’s basketball team returned to Cameron Indoor Stadium to face Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Duke graduate guard Haley Gorecki and senior forward Leoanna Odom led the Blue Devils to a 58-46 victory

The Blue Devils (11-9, 4-5 ACC) outscored Georgia Tech (14-6, 5-4 ACC)  24-9 in the second quarter which became the deciding factor of the game.

“Our defense was excellent,” said Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie. “We played well together. Offensively we did some very smart things. We just want the ball more. We want the ball in our hands more often.”

Gorecki continued her trend today of being the only player nationally to average over 17.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals. She led the Blue Devils in scoring with 18 points and had four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

“I’m going to use the word bully but not in a bad way,” said Yellow Jackets head coach Nell Fortner. “She can bully you to the basket, she’s either going to score or she’s going to draw a foul.”

Odom finished the game with 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

What’s Next

Today’s loss marked the second-consecutive defeated fo the Yellow Jackets against a Triangle-area team. Georgia Tech returns to Atlanta to host the Miami Hurricanes Thursday, Jan. 30, at 6 p.m.

Next up, the Blue Devils play the N.C. State Wolfpack at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 2 pm.
