Durham, NC – Tiffany Griffin, founder of Bright Black, grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts, “interestingly enough, a town pretty similar to Durham – pretty racially diverse, a once-thriving small city” said Griffin. She then went on to become a social psychologist and came to North Carolina in 2009 to pursue her postdoctoral, and fell in love with the city of Durham. “It was down-to-earth, warm, with a level of grit that was very familiar and very comfortable,” she said. However, she moved to DC in 2011 but, seven years later, she had to come back. This time with her husband Dariel Heron and daughter Elena Heron

Dariel and Tiffany started making candles as a hobby in 2014, with no idea it would turn into a successful company. However, that all changed five years later when “Bright Black” launched in 2019. Bright Black sells handcrafted candles with intense custom scents. The candles are vegan and all-natural, including lead-free wooden wicks. The modern design is stunning, with a phthalate-free coconut and soy wax inside. As for the reason behind the name, they hope to change the negative connotation of the word Black. “Bright” meaning beauty and intelligence was just the perfect word to help do the job.

There was a lot of trial and error that came with being a black entrepreneur, “it is difficult accessing social networks that can share key information regarding starting and scaling a business,” Griffin stated. Once COVID hit, the company was impacted due to the disrupted supply chains along with in-person markets being canceled. However, despite the challenges, the family is fortunate they are still standing especially while having a disproportionate number of Black businesses that have permanently closed during the pandemic.

Overall, the company’s vision is to help make a world where the complexity, beauty, and brilliance of Blackness is widely known, recognized, embraced, and celebrated and have a mission to make and share high-quality candles that honor the Black Diaspora. The company would also love to hire local community members to help the economy, as well as continue to cultivate dialogue through their scent designs and offerings.
