City of Raleigh Names Tiesha Hinton New Community Engagement Manager

RALEIGH – The City of Raleigh has named Tiesha Hinton to lead the newly-formed Office of Community Engagement. She was selected following a competitive national search that included nearly 300 candidates.

Ms. Hinton began her career as a community organizer in a Cleveland, Ohio-based community development corporation before serving the City of Durham as a Housing Research Consultant. She has been employed with the City of Winston-Salem since 2015, serving most recently as the founding director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

“Her genuine understanding of how to connect with people of all backgrounds, her passion for providing avenues for residents to engage with their local government, and her love for the community as a native of Raleigh made her the clear choice for this role,”  said Assistant City Manager Evan Raleigh.

City Manager Marchell Adams-David added, “I am pleased we have identified someone with such a special connection to the city to carry out the Council’s vision for a reimagined approach to community engagement that aligns with the needs, interests, and desires of all residents.”

In Winston-Salem, her current role has focused on examining city policies, practices, and programs that may perpetuate systemic inequities and on enhancing efforts to advance equity in organizational decision-making. Ms. Hinton’s previous roles have focused on a wide range of issues including enhancing the ability of minority- and women-owned businesses to participate in municipal contracting opportunities, eliminating barriers to the development of affordable housing, implementing programs to promote youth involvement in neighborhood volunteerism, and developing strategies to combat poverty, among others.

“It is an absolute honor to be selected to serve the residents of the City of Raleigh in this role. I am eager to return home to be a champion for community engagement,” said Ms. Hinton. “I look forward to building new relationships, strengthening existing ones, and co-developing strategies that promote people-focused processes.”

Ms. Hinton is a proud Aggie and holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from North Carolina A&T State University.  She received her master’s degree in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio.  Ms. Hinton is also a graduate of the Municipal and County Administration program at the UNC School of Government and of Leadership Winston-Salem’s Flagship Program.

Ms. Hinton will begin her new role with the City of Raleigh effective September 27.
