Lady Falcons Get in the Win Column in Home Opener

RALEIGH, NC- The St. Augustine’s University Lady Falcons Women’s Basketball team got into the win column Friday evening (Nov. 19) when it defeated the William Peace University Pacers in its home opener at Emery Gymnasium in dominating fashion, 81-55, to improve to 1-2 on the season.

After dropping their first two games, the ability to get into the win column in their home opener is just a boost to continue moving forward at the same pace for the Lady Falcons.

SAU had two players in double-figure scoring Friday with Junior Power Forward Vernisha Robin leading the way tallying 14 points shooting 5 for 6 from the field and 2 rebounds in 15 minutes. Senior Point Guard Nyshia Bradford also was a solid contributor totaling 10 points, four assists, and two rebounds for the Lady Falcons.

Sophomore guard Nautica Falls led the way for the Pacers with 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists in 16 minutes.

In the first half, the Falcons were trading baskets with the Pacers, however still holding a strong 11 point margin into the break.

However, in the second half, it was all Lady Falcons.

Saint Augustine seemed to be able to get everything they wanted in the second half, applying strong man-to-man pressure and a full-court press that brought many struggles to the Pacer offense. The Lady Falcons were able to force 32 Pacer turnovers which led to easy transition points the other way.

They also outrebounded the Pacers 52-36 and accumulated 25 second-chance points that kept possessions alive, which were two significant stat lines that stood out that helped lead Saint Aug. to victory.

SAU also did a really good job of moving the ball and creating 2 on 1 opportunity that helped their overall offensive efficiency.  If the Lady falcons want to continue their winning surge, they will need to replicate the energy and effort they displayed tonight.

The Lady Falcons will see if they can in fact keep their momentum going when they host the University of Virginia Lynchburg Saturday, Nov. 20 at 4:30 PM at Emery Gymnasium.
