Carter’s 15 Points Help Eagles Soar Over Delaware State Hornets

DURHAM, NC – The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Eagles women’s basketball team (8-11 overall, 2-2 MEAC) must’ve been inspired by the celebration of the football team becoming HBCU National Champions.

Thanks to junior guard Kimia Carter’s (Chattanooga, TN/Florida Atlantic) 15 points and the assistance of redshirt senior guard Kiera Lowery (Memphis, TN/Auburn), the Eagles romped the Delaware State Hornets (3-12 overall and 1-3 MEAC) by the score of 63-44, in front of 1,362 people in McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.

In addition to Carter’s performance, redshirt sophomore forward Morgan Callahan (Beach Park, IL) added 12 points and redshirt junior center Kimieira Burks made 11 baskets for the Eagles, who won their third consecutive victory at home.

Redshirt sophomore Aniya Finger (Charlotte, NC) kicked off the Eagles’ game by sinking two free throws at 7:55 in the first quarter. Afterward, senior guard Alexis Morange (Bronx, NY) sank two free throws for Delaware State, so the teams became tied at two apiece. Then, at 6:45, Burks hit a three-pointer to break the tie. Soon, Delaware State freshman guard/forward Deyonce Thompson (Grand Rapids, MI) hit a jumper to trim it to a basket. Then, the Eagles hit basket after basket, as they ended the first quarter with a 13-4 lead.

Thanks to their stout defense, which has them nationally ranked at four in turnovers forced per game, they were able to commence the first half with only ten points, as the Eagles led by the score of 33-10, once redshirt junior guard Tippy Robertson (Chicago, IL) hit a three at the buzzer.

The Eagles kept dominating, maintaining a comfortable lead in the second half, in a game where they were never behind. The Eagles forced Delaware State to 30.2 field goal percentage and shooting 21.4% from three-point range. The Eagles also out-rebounded the Hornets by a 42-32 advantage on the boards.

For Delaware State, freshman guard/forward Savannah Brooks (Taneytown, MD) and sophomore guard Joy Watkins (Henderson, NV) led the Hornets with nine points each.

In the next Eagles’ women’s basketball team game, they host Maryland-Eastern Shore at a 5:30 pm contest in McLendon-McDougald Arena, on Monday, Jan. 23rd.  Delaware State travels down to Orangeburg, SC to face the South Carolina State Bulldogs at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Center, in a 5:30 matchup on Monday night.
