‘Girls Trip 2’ Is In The Works; Will Reunite Original Cast In Ghana

Pack your bags, the “Girls Trip” cast is taking us to West Africa for its sequel! Writer-director-producer Tracy Oliver, who co-wrote the 2017 movie, announced the news while at Sundance over the weekend. While promoting Season two of “Harlem,” her Prime Video series starring Meagan Good, Oliver disclosed that the “Girls Trip 2” is “officially happening. I can say that.”

Oliver also spilled the beans on the setting for the forthcoming film. The original film which starred Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish will reunite the full cast in Ghana for the second iteration of the movie, according to Oliver, Variety reports.

The ladies of Girls Trip will look to attend the popular Afrochella festival which takes place in Ghana annually attracting prominent musical acts from the region.

The first “Girls Trip” was a significant box office hit, grossing $140 million worldwide on a modest $16 million budget. Malcolm D. Lee directed the project, produced by Packer and co-written by Oliver and Kenya Barris from a story they conceived with Erica Rivinoja. It also launched the recently-embattled Haddish into superstardom.

Haddish’s career suffered after she was the subject of a lawsuit, accusing her and fellow comic Aries Spears of sexual abuse of a minor. Although the lawsuit was dropped, the backlash against Haddish persisted so much that fans have taken to social media, petitioning to have her replaced in “Girls Trip 2.” Several people posted on Twitter that Haddish’s character should be recast with “Abbott Elementary” star Janelle James.

Packer addressed the Haddish controversy during an interview on the “Club Shay Shay podcast earlier this month. The producer told host Shannon Sharpe that he won’t consider recasting Haddish, especially now that the lawsuit was dropped and Haddish expressed her regret.

“I think she’s very talented, remorseful and has since apologized,” Packer said. “I would advocate for her. ‘Girls Trip 2,’ I couldn’t make it without her.”

A production timeline is unknown as Oliver still needs to submit her script.
