Game Preview: Duke Blue Devils vs Wake Forest Deacons

A revenge matchup between the Duke University Blue Devils (5-3) and the Wake Forest Deacons (4-4) faces off Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023, at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Last year the Blue Devils overcame the Deacons 34-31 in the final regular game season, this game-winner set the tone for the 2023 clash that approaches. Duke leading the grueling series 59-31-2.

Riley Leonard played a significant role in this win as he completed 29 tosses for 41 attempts for 391 passing yards with four touchdowns. Additionally, he facilitated the ball to running back Jaquez Moore, who made significant gains with 6 carries for 62 yards, further solidifying their team’s offensive prowess.

Duke’s offense switched out first-string quarterback to Henry Belin IV a freshman who appeared for his first career start in the NC State where they defeated 24-3 as Belin connected with receiver Jalon Calhoun and Jeremiah Hasley, he threw 107 yards with 2 touchdowns.

As Leonard reappeared in the matchup against the Florida State game from an ankle injury, he was able to make plays through the first half of the game stepping in Belin in the result. Belin could come in and contribute to the offense and make the right plays in the right moments.

Defensively, Duke has been relentless, currently holding the second position in the ACC rankings. Linebacker Tre Freeman led the team with 60 tackles on the season, closely trailed by Dorian Mausi with 53 tackles.

On the other side, the Wake Forest Deacons are hungry for redemption after a tough loss against the Florida State Seminoles. Redshirt sophomore Mitch Griffis, returning to full health, poses a significant threat to the Blue Devils. The Deacons’ rushing game has been robust, with Demond Claiborne amassing 493 yards and 5 touchdowns for 110 carries, complemented by Justice Ellison’s 425 yards for 86 carries on the season.

Facing some weakness on the offensive line could be behind their passing game. Still, defensively they have shown strong resilience throughout the season reflecting well on turnovers and not-so-well executed drives from the offense.

With high plays from linebacker Jacob Roberts, with 57 tackles, 22 solo stops and 35 assists. By his side are Chelen Garnes, Dylan Hazen and Malik Mustapha.

As these formidable teams prepare to face off, football enthusiasts can expect an intense battle marked by skillful plays, determined defenses and a hunger for victory.
