GREENSBORO – Judge Lora Cubbage, Resident Superior Court Judge in Guilford County, is a candidate for the highest court in the state. Immediately after filing her candidacy, she said, “With excitement and an unwavering commitment to leveraging my vast legal, life, and community experience to advance the fair and just administration of the law and respect for the judiciary, I am running to be your next Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.”

With 18 years of dedicated service, including roles as Assistant District Attorney, Assistant Attorney General, District, and Superior Court Judge, Judge Cubbage brings a wealth of experience to the table and assures that she intends to campaign just as she serves – with integrity, focus, and respect for all.

Judge Cubbage was a guest on a recent episode of the “PC Politics” podcast and talked with host Phyllis Coley about her background, why she became a lawyer and then a judge, and what makes her uniquely qualified for a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court. (Watch the full episode below.)

Cubbage took her career experience as a master barber to earn her undergraduate degree from NC A&T State University and her Juris Doctor from UNC Chapel Hill School of Law, passing the bar on her first attempt in 2006. (submitted)

Hailing from Shenandoah, VA, Cubbage, a first-generation college student, overcame challenges as a single mother; she took her career experience as a master barber to earn her undergraduate degree from NC A&T State University and her Juris Doctor from UNC Chapel Hill School of Law, passing the bar on her first attempt in 2006.  Cubbage said she was “made in NC; thus, she understands the needs and aspirations of the residents in this great state.”

In explaining her decision to run, Cubbage passionately addresses the issues facing North Carolina, drawing on her extensive background as a prosecutor, state defense attorney, and trial court judge. She states, “I have presided over a wide range of cases, including the voting/redistricting cases.  This extensive experience has provided me with in-depth knowledge and skills in handling complex legal matters and making impartial decisions.  I bring the unique perspective of a trial court judge to the Supreme Court, which allows me to understand the challenges faced in a trial.  My experience in presiding over jury trials and reviewing lower court rulings uniquely qualifies me to contribute valuable insights to the Supreme Court’s decision-making process.  This much-needed perspective doesn’t exist on the Supreme Court currently as no sitting Justice has ever served as a trial court judge.”

Cubbage highlights the statistical and personal impact the issues that come before the court have on herself and the Black and brown community.  While highlighting the crucial need for the next Associate Justice to have experience in all areas of the law that the high court will review, she also agrees that the clarion calls to have racial equity in our courts that we have heard over the last year is critical in that there is a need for the high court to mirror the vast diversity of NC.   While not running on the fact that she is a woman of color, Cubbage re-iterates that it is her experience and expertise that makes her the most qualified candidate, “who just happens to be a woman of color.”

Cubbage indicates that there is also a critical need to rebuild trust back into the judicial system and to do that, the public must see similarities of themselves to start rebuilding trust in the judicial system.  Cubbage proudly asserts that she is not just a symbol of diversity but she is also the beacon of hope that many need to see.  She understands the needs and aspirations of the residents because her life experience has been like many others. In essence, Judge Lora Cubbage’s candidacy is not just about her qualifications for the high court but a resolute commitment to creating a fair and inclusive path for those who follow in her footsteps.
