Duke Blue Devils Keys To Victory vs Stanford

The Duke Blue Devils host the Stanford Cardinals at Wallace Wade Stadium at 4 p.m. ET for their first ACC football game of the season; the Blue Devils enter the game 2–0 after wins against Tulane and Illinois.

The best way for Duke to make it 3-0 on Saturday is to establish the running game. The key is simple: hand the ball off to Nate Sheppard. He has been the leading contributor to offensive success after two games, with 59 rushing attempts, 374 yards, and 3 touchdowns.

Being formidable in previous games, giving Sheppard enough carries will force Stanford’s defense to stack the box. This will let the Blue Devils run more play-action and convert more downfield throws, creating easier passing opportunities. The offensive line has to be patient, yet still show physicality. Duke needs to play to its strengths, avoid negative plays, and keep giving Sheppard opportunities to wear down the Cardinal defense.

Then comes Quarterback Walker Eget, healthy after dealing with an injury; his key is simple: Quick throws, play-action passes, maybe a couple of deep shots, and designed movement in and around the pocket can help prevent Stanford’s defense from getting pressure.

Saturday isn’t simply another September game. It is Duke’s ACC opener, and the Blue Devils have already established themselves as a team capable of competing at a high level. The objective should be to begin conference play by reinforcing physicality, defense, and strong situational discipline. Run the football. Win the line of scrimmage. Protect Eget. Force Stanford to drive the length of the field. Avoid turnovers. Finish drives. Duke doesn’t need to reinvent itself against Stanford.
