Duke Blue Devils looks to Bounce Back Against Virginia

Charlottesville, V.A. – The (4-2) Duke Blue Devils head into a season-defining ACC conference matchup against the (4-3) Virginia Cavaliers to get their conference championship and postseason hopes back alive. With both teams coming off disappointing losses, this is a key opportunity to gain momentum in the rest of the season. The Blue Devils have been close in their recent losses, falling by just three points to Georgia Tech and four to North Carolina.  Duke must turn those narrow losses into a winning performance on the road.

Nate Sheppard enters the matchup with 820 rushing yards, 259 receiving yards, and 12 total touchdowns. He’s a threat both running between the tackles and catching passes out of the backfield, which has earned him more All-American Selections. Virginia has struggled to contain opposing running backs recently, allowing a 100-yard rusher in four of its last five games. That gives Duke and Sheppard a clear vision: establish the ground game early and throughout the entire day.

Virginia will likely focus on slowing Sheppard, so quarterback Walker Eget needs to capitalize. Accurate throws, quick decisions, and productive play-action passes will prevent the Cavaliers from crowding the line of scrimmage.

Duke’s defense needs to limit Virginia’s rushing attack, led by Jekail Middlebrook and a group of capable backs. Winning first down and forcing long third downs would allow Duke to put more pressure on quarterback Beau Pribula, who has thrown 13 touchdown passes and one interception this season. Duke needs to pressure him and disrupt his timing, contain his running, force difficult decisions without leaving receivers open downfield, make open-field tackles, and play a physical yet sound defense.

If the Blue Devils follow those three things for all four quarters, they can leave Charlottesville with a much-needed ACC win.
