“Do The Right Thing”: Take Bus To 30th Anniversary Block Party

Spike Lee will be hosting an all-day block party for the 30th anniversary of his 1989 film, “Do the Right Thing,” on June 30. The celebration will take place on the block in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn where much of the film was shot. Stuyvesant Ave. between Lexington and Quincy has since been re-named “Do the Right Thing Way,”

“It’s going to be lit,” Lee said during a recent interview with TheWrap.

The event will be free and open to the public, in the same spirit as Lee’s past block parties, including an annual Michael Jackson party and a Prince-themed party in 2017.

blockWant to be a part of this historic and “lit” event? Tameka Nichole, of Raleigh, is sponsoring a bus to the “Do The Right Thing” (DTRT) 30th Anniversary Block Party. The luxury motor coach, provided by Legacy Tours, will depart from Raleigh-Durham late on the evening of June 29th with pickups in Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Richmond, Virginia.

The Tameka Nichole Experience offers an 80s “party bus style” with an onboard comedian & DJ. Each traveler will receive an exclusive mixtape release of a special blend by Blendspecialist of 80s and early 90s hits, many from “Do The Right Thing” soundtrack. Bring your favorite beverages and treats. A stop will be made to change into 80s attire, which is highly suggested.

“I decided to organize a day bus trip but I wanted a theme to give a different type of traveling experience,” says Tameka Nichole. “As a 34-year old, I’ve been a fan of Spike Lee movies since I discovered him. Earlier this month I came across a Facebook post that “Do The Right Thing” was celebrating its 30th-year release celebration block party style. This is perfect I thought, ‘why not host a trip’ celebrating my 34 years during this iconic movies’ 30th year anniversary.”

The DTRT 30th Anniversary Block Party organizers are inviting all, dressed as their favorite DTRT character, to enjoy the intergenerational festivities that will include an assortment of dancers, DJs, entertainment and outdoor activities.

Starting at 12 pm, the popular Bring Your Own Vinyl event, MADD CRATES will be held on the Arts Bank lawn. Bring your favorite 90s hip-hop records to spin. A special outdoor screening of “Do The Right Thing” will start at dusk. All are welcomed to the cookout!

Bus returns immediately after Block Party ends with drop-offs in the same cities as pickups.

“Do the Right Thing” explores racial tensions in a Brooklyn neighborhood over the course of a single summer day. In 1999, the Library of Congress added the film to the National Film Registry.

The movie has long been acclaimed as one of Lee’s greatest works, receiving nominations for Best Supporting Actor for Danny Aiello and Best Original Screenplay for Lee in 1989 — but it was memorably snubbed for nominations in Best Picture and Best Director. “Driving Miss Daisy” went on to win Best Picture.

Discussing his own long-lasting career in the same interview with TheWrap, Lee joked, “This is my fourth decade. Check my IMDb page.”
