Duke stays unbeaten at home in win over No. 17 Miami
DURHAM, NC — Kyle Filipowski put in 17 points and 14 rebounds and Jeremy Roach scored 14 points off the bench in his first game in two weeks en route to Duke defeating No. 17 Miami 68-66 on Saturday.
Roach had missed the last three games for the Blue Devils with a Toe injury that has plagued him throughout the whole year. Duke has now won three of their last four games and remains undefeated at home on the year.
Junior guard Nigel Pack led the way for Miami with 18 points on 4-of-9 shooting from downtown. Canes’ season-leading scorer Isaiah Wong scored just 7 points today on 2-of-8 shooting as he struggled to get open looks all night.
The matchup between ACC foes stayed close all afternoon as it was all knotted up at 38 by halftime. Duke went up 55-47 thanks to a 10-0 run while Miami went on a scoring drought that lasted nearly six minutes. The Canes would bring the score within two as Jordan Miller went on a personal 8-0 run. Miller finished the game with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
Miami (15-4, 6-3 ACC) missed three shots on one possession in the final minute with a chance to tie or take the lead. Filipowski went to the free throw line with 18.2 seconds, making both to give Duke a two-possession lead at 68-64. These shots at the line proved to be the dagger.
“We all stuck together really well against a great team, a ranked team at that,” guard Tyrese Proctor told me after the game. “Our mindset coming in off of a loss was to just play hard. We had a great week of practice, I think that was key in winning us the game today.” Proctor finished with 11 points and shot 3-of-7 from behind the arc.
The Blue Devils (14-5, 5-3 ACC) look to stay hot on Monday as they take on Virginia Tech on the road at 7 PM ET on ESPN.
