NCCU Eagles Hold Off Late East Texas A&M Rally to Secure Third Straight Win

COMMERCE, TX – The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Eagles weathered a furious late-game surge to stay on top Saturday night in Commerce, Texas. Despite a pair of last-minute touchdowns and back-to-back onside kick attempts from East Texas A&M, the Eagles held firm to earn their third straight victory and keep momentum rolling into their midseason bye week.

Game Recap

The night started with a bang for the home team when East Texas A&M quarterback Ron Peace connected on a 73-yard touchdown pass just seconds into the game. But NCCU answered immediately as Walker Harris fired a 22-yard scoring strike to Chance Peterson and followed with another touchdown to Chauncey Spikes later in the first quarter.

By halftime, the Eagles had built a 31-21 lead, powered by Chris Mosley’s early rushing touchdown and a 20-yard field goal from Kaleb Robison.

Momentum Swings in the Second Half

The Eagles’ defense and special teams came alive after the break. Mehki Wall electrified the sidelines with a 52-yard kickoff return to open the half, setting up Harris for a short touchdown run. Defensive lineman Donquarius Parker then delivered a critical sack that forced a fumble and safety — the team’s second safety in as many games.

Running back Arthur Rodgers added his second touchdown of the night, stretching the lead to 47-21 before Robison’s clutch 24-yard field goal extended the cushion even further.

Late Drama, But NCCU Holds Strong

The Lions refused to quit, mounting two late scoring drives in the final minutes and cutting the margin to just one possession. But when NCCU recovered the second onside kick attempt, Mosley powered through for key first downs to close the door on a comeback and seal the win.

What’s Next for the Eagles

With the victory, NCCU improves to 4-2 on the season and now heads into a much-needed bye week before traveling to Florida A&M on Oct. 11 for a showdown against a former MEAC rival.

Moving Forward

The Eagles’ resilience under pressure and their ability to answer each East Texas A&M push with big plays on both sides of the ball signal a team finding its stride midseason. With two weeks to rest and reset, NCCU will look to fine-tune its game plan for a critical road test in Tallahassee.
