A trailblazer in law and politics, Senator Blue’s remarkable career exemplifies excellence, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to public service.
A Trailblazer in Law and Justice
After earning his law degree from Duke University, Daniel T. Blue, Jr. broke barriers as one of the first African Americans to integrate the prestigious North Carolina law firm Sanford, Cannon, Adams & McCullough. In 1976, he founded Blue LLP, where he continues to serve as managing partner alongside his sons and daughter-in-law, building a family legacy of excellence and advocacy.
Decades of Distinguished Public Service
Elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1980, Senator Blue has served the people of Wake County for more than two decades. During his tenure, he chaired the Judiciary and Appropriations Committees and made history as Speaker of the House from 1991 to 1995 — the first African American to hold that position in North Carolina.
In 2009, Blue transitioned to the North Carolina Senate, where his leadership continued to shape state policy. As Senate Democratic Leader from 2014 to 2024, he championed equity, education, and opportunity, leaving an indelible mark on the state’s political landscape.
Legacy of Leadership and Mentorship
Throughout his distinguished career, Senator Blue has been a steadfast advocate for justice, fairness, and the next generation of leaders. His unwavering commitment to mentorship has inspired countless public servants and attorneys who credit him as a guiding influence.
