[Review] Lifetime Original Movie “Single Black Female” Is Highly Relatable (4/5 Stars)

Single Black Female
Amber Riley (l) and Raven Goodwin star in “Single Black Female”

Single Black Female is a Lifetime original movie modern-day remake of 1992’s Single White Female. Directed by Shari Carpenter and written by Tessa Evelyn Scott and Sa’Rah L. Jones, Single Black Female tells the story of relevant challenges that today’s families face. Monica (Raven Goodwin) is a successful tv host competing for the new hosting job of an afternoon talk show. While proving to the company that she is the next big thing she becomes afflicted after the death of her father and a bad breakup. With everything going on Monica hires a new assistant, Simone (Amber Riley) who immerses herself into Monica’s life. After moving from Virginia to Texas and moving in next door, Simone has a devious plan and a mighty secret that causes trouble in Monica’s life.

Single Black Female also stars K. Michelle and Janet Hubert. The film premieres on Lifetime on February 5th at 8p/7c.

During a recent virtual press conference with cast members Raven Goodwin, Amber Riley, and Janet Hubert, I found their replies to my question about how they related to their characters to be profound, enlightening, and encouraging. Watch now. Let me know in the comment section below if you agree (or not).

Review

Single Black Female is a movie people can relate to. The movie features family secrets, death, relationship problems, deceit, and more. The creators did a great job with casting, wardrobe, and the overall storytelling. I was intrigued by the movie because it told a story that people could easily connect to. For instance, learning how to cope with the loss of someone and trying to move on with life, the pressure parents place on their children to be successful, the issue of being aware of your surroundings and protecting yourself, being careful with who you let into your circle and etc. I also liked the fact that the creators gave us clues and used symbolism throughout the film. As I watched I tried piecing together Simone’s true intentions towards Monica and in the end, I was correct, but it happened to be a little more to the story than I thought.

In closing, I give this film a rating of four stars. I wish we could have seen more of Monica and her father’s relationship on camera and I wish we could have seen how Monica’s new relationship developed towards the end.

  1. 2 1/2 stars at best. The acting was sub-par and even for Lifetime it was too predicable. The stunts and effects were weak.

    1. The movie is heartwarming! I am a “lifetime movie” person. (Before ID Channel it was lifetime) It definitely followed the formula for a lifetime movie. The difference is they used beautiful black people, the black culture, and two full-figured, gorgeous black women as main characters. Happy to see that!!!

  2. Agree, but I would give this movie 2 stars: the acting is borderline, the storyline was a bit contrived and predictable. The cast members were beautiful, and the scenes were produced well. The profanity was confusing unless there exists some impression that cursing adds suspense when it comes to Blacks on film. Not sure if I want to see storylines that include VHI and Bravo reality stars getting roles that would otherwise be available to hard-working Black writers, producers, and more credible actors and actresses.

  3. On so many levels this was an awful production. The acting was amateur. The portrayal of the characters was weak and not believable. Most of the scenes were contrived and poorly played out. Absolutely awful in comparison to the original Single White Female. Don’t believe the hype!

  4. Unfortunately I agree with the above! The movie was below par at best! Very, very predictable and super contrived and ridiculous! Some scenes were actually comedic in nature because it was so unrealistic! But the ladies looked beautiful but the script wasn’t very interesting. I would have loved to give this movie 4 stars but it actually only deserves 2!
