2022-23 MEAC Men’s Basketball Tiebreaker Scenarios (as of 3/1/23) 

NORFOLK, VA – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) began its 52nd year of intercollegiate competition heading into the 2022-23 academic school year. Located in Norfolk, Va., the MEAC is made up of eight outstanding historically Black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina Central University, and South Carolina State University.

Regular Season Standings With Remaining Matchups (3/2/23) 

Howard (10-3) vs. NSU 

Norfolk State (9-4) at Howard 

NCCU (9-4) at SCSU 

Maryland E. Shore (8-5) at DSU 

Morgan State (7-6) vs. CSU 

Delaware State (4-9) vs. UMES 

Coppin State (3-10) at MSU 

S.C. State (2-11) vs. NCCU 

  1. If NSU defeats HOW and NCCU beats SCSU:
  • HOW, NSU, and NCCU will be 10-4 and named co-champions 
  • NSU earns No. 1 in MEAC Tournament via the best winning percentage against the tied teams’ tiebreakers. 
  • NCCU earns No. 2 seed via scoring margin tiebreaker with HOW (135-131) 
  • HOW earns the No. 3 seed 
  1. If HOW defeats NSU, SCSU defeats NCCU, and UMES defeats DSU:
  • HOW finishes 11-3 and NSU, NCCU, and UMES finish 9-5 
  • HOW named regular-season champion and No. 1 seed in MEAC Tournament Tournament seeding for Nos. 2-4 would go to NSU (2), NCCU (3), and UMES (4), respectively, via the best winning percentage against the tied teams’ tiebreaker. 
  1. If HOW defeats NSU, NCCU defeats SCSU and UMES defeats DSU: 
  • HOW finishes 11-3, NCCU finishes 10-4, NSU and UMES finish 9-5 
  • NSU earns No. 3 seed based on a head-to-head tiebreaker 
  • UMES earns the No. 4 seed 
  1. If CSU defeats MSU and UMES defeats DSU:
  • CSU and DSU finish 4-10 
  • CSU earns No. 6 seed based on best winning percentage against tied teams’ tiebreaker 
  • DSU earns No. 7 seed 
  1. If SCSU defeats NCCU and MSU defeats CSU: 
  • CSU and SCSU finish 3-11 
  • CSU earns No.7 seed based on best winning percentage against tied teams’ tiebreaker 
  • SCSU earns No. 8 seed 
  1. If DSU defeats UMES and MSU defeats CSU: 
  • UMES and MSU finish 8-6 
  • MSU earns No. 4 seed based on best winning percentage against tied teams’ tiebreaker 
  • UMES earns No. 5 seed 

Tiebreaker Policy 

Two-Team Tie 
  1. a) Head-to-Head Competition 
  2. b) Conference-only record based on winning percentage vs. highest ranked team in conference standings; In case of tied percentages: 3-0 is better than 2-0; and 2-0 is better than 1-0 (and 0-1 is better than 0-2), continuing down in descending order 
  3. c) Scoring margin between two teams 
  4. d) Coin toss by the Commissioner 
Multiple-team tie (3 or more) 
  1. a) Team with best-winning percentage vs. all-tied teams. Once the top team is selected the remaining teams are based on their record amongst the original tied teams. In case of tied percentages: 3-0 is better than 2-0, and 2-0 is better than 1-0 (and 0-1 is better than 0-2) 
  2. b) Conference-only record based on winning percentage vs. highest ranked team in conference standings, continuing down in descending order 
  3. c) Scoring margin vs. common conference opponents 
  4. d) Best winning percentage in non-conference games against Division I opponents 
  5. e) Coin toss by the Commissioner 
2023 MEAC TOURNAMENT

The 2023 MEAC Basketball Tournament will take place at the Norfolk Scope Arena March 8-11. Each of the conference’s eight men’s basketball programs will compete in the single-elimination tournament, with the champion earning the MEAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. March 8 and 9 will feature the quarterfinal rounds, with the semifinals on Friday, March 10, and the championship game on Saturday, March 11. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be broadcast on ESPN+ and Saturday’s championship game will air live on ESPN2.
