NCDMV Expands Online Driver’s License Renewal Options Under New State Law
More North Carolina Drivers Can Now Renew Licenses Online — Cutting Wait Times at NCDMV Offices
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) has expanded its online services, allowing eligible drivers to renew their driver’s license online for a second consecutive time — even if they don’t have a REAL ID. The change, announced today, follows the signing of Senate Bill 245 into law last week by Gov. Josh Stein and is expected to reduce wait times at DMV offices across the state significantly.
“We encourage our customers to renew their driver’s license online if they’re eligible. It’s fast, easy, and helps reduce wait times at our offices,” said DMV Commissioner Paul Tine. “By choosing online services, you’re freeing up space for those who need in-person assistance.”
What’s Changing for Drivers
- Non-REAL ID licenses: Drivers without a REAL ID can now complete two consecutive online renewals instead of being forced to return in person.
- REAL ID licenses: Soon, REAL ID holders will also be able to renew online a second time — as long as they have had an in-person transaction with a new photo taken since their last renewal.
- Teen drivers: In the coming weeks, teens will be able to upgrade from Level 2 Limited Provisional (“before 9s”) to Level 3 Full Provisional (“after 9s”) licenses online. Teens can upgrade from Level 3 to a regular Class C license online on their 18th birthday.
Why It Matters
State officials say these changes could move up to 400,000 transactions online, freeing NCDMV offices for customers who need in-person assistance, such as first-time licenses, ID cards, or REAL ID upgrades.
The expansion of online services is part of the DMV’s ongoing effort to modernize and reduce notoriously long wait times while improving customer convenience.
